Seven Stylish, Summer Interior Design Trends for Your New-Build Home

Posted on: July 15th, 2019

Make your new home unique, cozy and on-trend

You’ve finally settled into your new-build home! After months of searching through new homes for sale, you ended up choosing the perfect local home builder for your family’s needs, and you created your dream home. You’re loving the brand-new appliances and wide-open floor plan. The weather is warm, and you want your living space to feel fresh and open. Your new home, with its clean lines and neutral color scheme, is a blank palette, just waiting for you to put your own unique, creative mark on it.

If you don’t know where to start, we’re here to help. Interior design trends change a lot from one year to the next, but these seven stylish new home interior design trends have a timeless appeal and will help you create a space that’s livable and functional, but still stylish and sophisticated.

  1. Texturize it. Mixing textures and patterns can be intimidating. However, if you don’t take a few chances in this department, your new home can end up feeling a bit too matchy-matchy. Start small. For example, choose one room to mix two patterns, like a bold stripe in your upholstery and a strong geometric pattern in your drapes. The shimmer of a mirror is a nice offset to the rugged stone of a fireplace. Add in a furry throw to keep things cozy and current.

  1. Go bold. A pop of (surprising) color. Try an old trick with a new and unexpected twist; paint one wall a contrasting color, but don’t be shy about it. Gone are the days of chocolate brown and charcoal gray. Today, retro colors like teal, peacock blue and gold are hot. A bold contrast wall absolutely adds a “wow” factor to your new build home. Sure, in a year or two, you might be ready for a change, but it’s an easy afternoon’s work to change it up.

  1. Embrace white space. Sophisticated graphic design in your new build home utilizes ample white space. In much the same way, leaving ample “white space” in your home makes it feel elegant and serene. Your new-build home has a great wide-open floorplan and nice, big rooms. Don’t feel that you have to fill up every inch of it with furniture.

  1. Spruce it up. Regardless of the color scheme you’ve chosen, every room in your home feels more welcoming with a touch of greenery. If you have enough natural light, find an easy-to-care for plant that fits your space, like a Boston fern, a ficus tree or potted palm. If you don’t have enough light, there are plenty of lovely (and very real-looking) faux plants that will spruce up any room.

  1. Create some kitchen drama. Your dream kitchen can make just as much of a statement as your great room does. Don’t be afraid to create some contrast. Pair light-colored cabinets with darker, chunky leather furniture and dramatic pendant lighting to design a space that’s functional, fun and funky all at once.

  1. Find your light. In any room that has a sunny window, create a cozy nook with a chair or chaise lounge where you can soak up the sun in the morning or afternoon. (Or, open the window a bit on a stormy day and enjoy the sound and smell of a warm summer rain.) Either way, arrange your room in a way that takes the best advantage of the windows in your new home and creates an inviting and relaxing oasis.

  1. Mix and match. Create interest in more than just dinner with a unique pairing of both standard, armless dining chairs and captain’s chairs in a contrasting style and finish. As an added bonus, those captain’s chairs will easily blend into your great room’s decor when you need additional seating there!

To Sum it Up

Your new-build home is a place that you’ll create memories in for years to come. Making it your own is just part of the fun. Design inspiration can come from anywhere and Rome wasn’t built in a day. So, take your time and pick up pieces in your travels that inspire and delight you, whether it’s a throw pillow, an area rug, a fabulous mirror or a sweet little vintage settee. It’s your dream home, so go ahead and make it yours!
